DIY Almond Mylk

In last week’s blog, MOOve on Over Dairy, we discussed the hot topic of human health and environmental impact in relation to the dairy industry.

To follow up, we are here to provide you with one of our many delicious solutions which can help today’s world triumph through these challenges.

AMOUNT INGREDIENTS
1 CUP RAW ALMONDS; SOAKED
4 CUPS PURE WATER
3 WHOLE MEDJOOL DATES; PITTED
1 TEASPOON MACA POWDER
½ TEASPOON VANILLA EXTRACT

(option: ½ teaspoon Tahitian vanilla powder or 1 vanilla bean)

1 DROP Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade CINNAMON ESSENTIAL OIL

(option: ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder)

 

↠ SOAKING:

  • Soak 3/4 cup of raw almonds for 8 hours in filtered water
  • Remove water, rinse the nuts inside a colander. Yields 1 cup of soaked “activated” almonds

↠ PREPPING:

  • Pour 4 cups of filtered water into the blender
  • Add 1 cup of activated almonds
  • Blend these ingredients together for about a minute on high speed setting
  • Pour the mylk through a nut milk bag to strain into a medium sized bowl
  • Squeeze the nut milk bag until the almond pulp is completely dry
  • Set pulp aside to store for use in other recipes!
  • Rinse the blender
  • Place mylk, pitted Medjool dates, vanilla extract, maca powder, and cinnamon essential oil into the blender
  • Blend for a minute on high speed
RAW REPUBLIC TIP:   If using a high-speed blender such as Vitamix or Blendtec you can blend the mylk for 4 minutes to drink it warm

 

↠ Superfood add-ons: (Mix and match to your liking!) Plant-based protein powder, raw cacao, matcha green tea powder, mesquite powder, gluten-free oats, shredded coconut,  hemp seeds, or chia seeds

↠ Alternative for almonds: Macadamia nuts or cashews

↠ Alternative for sweeteners: Stevia extract, raw honey, maple syrup, or lucuma

MOOve on Over, Dairy

 

As Raw Republic introduces a new line of snacks that offer a healthy twist on some old familiar favorites, we wanted to highlight some of the main reasons why we are passionate about passing on the dairy and focusing on plant-based alternatives.

Dairy-free options have been on the rise as research has continued to show us how the consumption of modern industrialized milk, cheese, and products alike have negatively impacted human health in a major way. Our hormones, skin, immune function, heart health, and digestion are all respectively vulnerable to these bio-hazards. As we raise the consciousness around how dairy affects our lives and our environment, we can easily gather inspiration for making healthier choices.

 

Dairy and Marketing

 

During World War I, there was a dairy surplus, and the USDA Dairy Division began to market cow’s milk. They did this by creating educational milk campaigns, and were successful in their goal to increase demand. As far back as the 1940s, ads for dairy linked milk to bone health. This is where the infamous celebrity milk mustache campaigns got their jump start.

Post war, the use of dairy marketing has infiltrated schools. Later paired up with USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) food guide pyramid, it became an influential hit that continues to misguide the population until today.

Most of the milk commercials you see on TV are sponsored by the American Dairy Association and not by valid research. Next time you see a milk commercial, read the small print at the end of the ad.

Millions of dollars get tunneled into dairy industry’s endorsements and “someone” is waiting to collect the profit. Therefore,  marketing better be  extremely convincing, even if it is at the stake of the environment, animal and human overall well-being.

Interestingly enough, some of the “experts” who helped create the USDA pyramid actually work for the dairy industry. Their influence has reflected the food & agricultural industry interests, rather than scientific, environmental, and nutritional interests.

 

Environmental Bio-hazard

 

Of all the agricultural land in the United States, 80% is used to raise animals for food and grow grain to feed them. That is almost half the total land mass of the lower 48 states that contributes to deforestation. In addition, it has been reported that a third of all raw materials and fossil fuels, and nearly half of all the water consumed in the United States are used in animal production for food consumption.

The massive amounts of excrement produced by livestock farms emit toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia into the air and is responsible for 18% of the total release of greenhouse gases worldwide. Large amounts of urine and feces on factory farms get overfilled and frequently contribute to water pollution. Both air and water pollution can cause numerous illness in humans and other life.

In summation, animal industrialization is a significant threat for the Earth’s biodiversity.

Due to extensive biological manipulation, including hormone injections, it has been reported that today’s dairy cows produce up to 12 times more milk than they would naturally produce to feed their young, among many other health oddities.

Trapped in a annual cycle of forced impregnation, perpetual lactation, all while kept in confinement in unsanitary conditions, most dairy cows’ bodies often fall ill. Due to their weakened bodies, a regular regimen of antibiotics must be administered to fight and prevent infections. The consistency of infections that arise within the livestock lead to increased antibiotic use. This eventually results in new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can infect people, as well as make its way into your food supply.

 

Identifying Sensitivities

 

Dairy can be responsible for a myriad of digestive problems, including destruction of good bacteria. Whereas normally functioning digestive tract has a foundation of healthy gut flora (which we spoke about in our recent blog, Gut Guardians.) In addition, the majority of humans stop producing significant amounts of lactase between ages 2 to 5. Without this enzyme, we cannot properly metabolize lactose, the sugar in milk.

Plentiful amounts of calcium derived from milk are actually harmful for human bones. Protein in milk acidifies the blood and in turn, bones release calcium which leads to bone degeneration, specifically osteoporosis.

If milk still happens to be a staple within your lifestyle, we encourage you to reconsider this outdated habit. These days we are aware that calcium is known to be much more optimally sourced when derived from whole plant foods. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, seaweed, whole grains and beans are all excellent sources to turn to.

Raw Tip: Maintain a consistent exercise routine and

monitor your intake of naturally sourced vitamin D to ensure healthy bones.

 

Cleansing by completely eliminate dairy for a period of time can help you identify whether you have any sensitivities. You may notice a difference in your weight, respiratory system, skin appearance, energy, and many more improvements if this is an irritant to your system.
