Cold-Pressed, Cold-BrewRecipes Wellness
There is a lot of buzz in the air surrounding cold-pressed juice and cold-brew coffee. We are excited to dive into this topic to show why conscious consumers are opting for these selections, and why Raw Republic chooses to carry these options.
As the heat rises this summer, we look forward to seeing you all combat the sweat with a delicious cold beverage from one of our stores! Stay cool, friends!
Juicing has maintained itself as a popular trend for many years for a very good reason. Benefits of juicing include optimizing the nutrient intake from fresh vegetables, leafy greens and fruits that otherwise would take much greater amount to consume. For example, you would have to eat about 3 bunches of dinosaur kale (9 to 10 leaves in a buch) to makeup one glass of juice. We at Raw Republic highly recommend eating your fresh fruits and vegetables with every meal, in addition to drinking a refreshing bottle of juice as a snack to combat free radicals imposed on us through the ignorant and malevolent imprints of modern civilization. Drinking juice is especially ideal when we have poor eating habits and during cleansing times of our dietary lifestyle.
What is this cold-pressed juice hype all about?
It’s a no brainer that pure juices are healthier than conventional sugar-laden, store-bought varieties, and it turns out that the juicers they are made from could make your fruit and vegetable juice combinations even more nutritious.
Traditional juicers, or centrifugal models utilize a fast-spinning metal blade that spins against a mesh filter, separating juice from flesh via centrifugal force; separating pulp and juice into different containers. The problem with centrifugal juicers is that the fast-spinning metal blade generates heat, which destroys some of the enzymes in the fruits and vegetables you’re juicing. The heat also oxidizes those nutrients, yielding less nutritious juice than a cold-press juicer.
Whereas, masticating or “cold-pressed” juicers extract juice by pressing and grinding fruits and vegetables without adding heat, hence the term “cold-pressed.” This is done with just enough pressure to extract the juice while preserving its vitamins, enzymes, trace minerals and overall nutrients up to five times more than centrifugal juicers. Being that cold-press juicing is so precise with its process of extraction, there is minimal air and heat so very little oxidation occurs. Through this process you not only get the highest quality plant-based nutrition available, you also get the freshest tasting juice possible, as well as a greater yield of juice from your produce as yet another bonus!
From your cup of coffee in the morning in the comfort of your own kitchen, to the second wave of specialty drinks served in places like Starbucks, to a third wave of specialty coffee experience in local coffee roasting shops; coffee has become the “it” drink of our century. Amongst cappuccinos and lattes, another popular coffee drink we often hear about is “cold-brew” coffee.
Lets explore coffee and cold-brew…
The coffee bean in of itself contains many phytochemicals, antioxidants, magnesium, potassium and other nutrients that research has shown to be beneficial to our bodies. Furthermore, cold-brew health benefits include the fact that it protects against damaging the powerful antioxidants in coffee that are otherwise sensitive to heat.
According to a number of scientific studies coffee brewed hot is far more acidic than cold-brewed. Also, it has been noted that cold-brewed coffee even has a sweeter taste because of its lower acidity. In general, your body requires a delicate balance (pH) of acidity and alkalinity to function and heal. The human body thrives with a higher level of alkalinity than acidity, and the foods and drinks we ingest determine, in part, our pH levels. When you drink high-acidity coffee your body’s pH becomes unbalanced, often creating discomfort for the body.
Here are important reasons what makes cold-brew such an amazing beverage:
- Improved control of gastric acid secretion and no acid reflux
- Less acid in coffee overall
- Increased amounts of antioxidants, particularly chlorogenic acid
- Less cafestol and kahweol; which gets trapped by specific coffee filters and due to 12 plus hour brewing process
- Less reaction in the body due to lower caffeine content
